Aug 10: My first impressions of Everquest: May 30, 2004

Well, I had to increase the in-game gamma, monitor brightness and contrast to see anything. But that wouldn't be too unusual.

I have noticed that the newest patches introduce menu options for signup and game play that are different than are shown in the book that came with the game. I checked Everquest's web site, and the new menus aren't in the online version of the manual either.

The sign up process was a bit of a problem. I had to use the ctrl-alt-del and kill the Everquest task so my browser would go active. Create my station account, etc., then start Everquest up to get to the next step. Now that I have all of the signup bits done, its not a problem logging in.

In the tutorial, when talking to the Lyndroh the Froglok banker, there is supposed to be a gold piece from somewhere to put in my character's backpack. It doesn't show up. And the tutorial gets stuck. I had to untarget and go to another NPC to continue the tutorial.

The ability to see different areas around a character is useful, but I cannot seem to zoom far up and see the surrounding area. Wouldn't even have to be that far up, just enough to see the nearby areas. This would be overhead, via F9.

While I can see that detailed maps can cause server lugging, I prefer maps that aren't line drawings with little detail. Getting lost inside the guildhouse is not a pleasant feeling...

Since the screen dumps are very dark, I use IrfanView logo by Gismo to increase the gamma and then resave them to the screenshots directory on my computer.

For example:

before after

And no, I don't find this game addictive. Frustrating, yes. But I'm one of those people who prefer clear wordage in the game interfaces and the instructions on how to use them. No, I'm not new to computers nor am I new to gaming.
